Performance management cycle

      · Planning includes establishing goals and determining success measures.

· The progress of these objectives is being monitored. If there is any improvement potential or lack of performance.

· Development of employees

· The employee's performance is then evaluated and rewarded, and the cycle begins again.

“If you can't measure it, you can't improve it,” according to a famous saying attributed to Peter Drucker. Or again, "you can't handle it unless you measure it."

What is the performance management and why is it needed?

Performance management refers to the process of ensuring that the organization's mission and goals are aligned with the help of employees. The method used by companies to achieve their objectives in the most efficient manner. In other words, achieving global (generally within the company), departmental, and organizational goals. (every aspect of the business) and individual (individual employee) performance is preferable.

 Purposes of performance management

The overarching goal of performance management is to create a high performance culture in which individuals and teams take ownership of the ongoing development of business processes as well as their own talents and contributions within a framework given by successful leadership.

How to do performance management

There are numerous approaches to performance management. There are two techniques to performance evaluation in the literature.

Behavioral approach:

Employees are evaluated based on their actions and the amount of effort they put forth. Behaviors are observed and assessed. This method can be used to provide detailed feedback and as well as to map out desired future behaviors.

 Results oriented approach:

Employees are assessed according to objective criteria in this approach. The focus is on quality and quantity, not on input but output. This approach is appropriate when the task is performed in many ways. The final outcome is important, not how it was done.

Characteristics of the effective performance management system

                  · Reliability:

Performance measures are compatible and error-free

· Validity:

All critical performance factors include measures, no important performance factor is overlooked by the measures, Actions do not cover factors outside control of employees

· Acceptability and fairness:

Employees believe that their performance evaluation and reward are fair in relation to the work they do.

Conclusion

Performance management cycle is essential, that is determining success measure with relatively manager's and the employee's combined responsibility.

By the overall effectiveness of the process shared responsibility will improve. Employees are most motivated when they feel involved in the process and understand why their goals are important to their associates and the rest of the organization. This also makes progress on goals chasing much easier.

In the performance management cycle, it is the manager's responsibility to create buy in and mutual commitment to the goals.

Key point

What is the management cycle for performance? The performance management cycle is an annual phenomenon in which staff are evaluated year round.

What are the four phases of a cycle of performance management?

There are four different stages in a typical performance management cycle: planning, supervision, development, evaluation & rewarding. The cycle begins again after that.

  1. Hi Thilina. Issues in the area of performance management and management control systems are typically complex and intertwined, but research tends to be based on simplified and partial settings. Simplification has made the work easier to carry out, but it has come at the price of increased uncertainty and conflicting findings from different studies. To help mitigate these issues, this article leads the performance management systems framework as a research tool for describing the structure and operation of performance management systems (PMSs) in a more complete manner.

  3. I do agree. The performance evaluations platforms should be included in a HRMS in an organization for its’ development. However this should be equal and fair for the all the levels and job roles. Some times the same evaluation is not fit for all the workers as they are engaged in different tasks. This uniqueness and equlity should be maintained to get the maximum use of these systems.

  4. i do agree. The performance evaluation system should be included in HRMS system of the organization. But this evaluation should be benifited each and every employee equally. Some time some evaluation method may not fit for some workers as they are engaged in different tasks. (i:e- in a manufacturing company factory staff and accounts dept. staff should be evaluated in two ways) .

Business leaders set the tone for performance management, while HR professionals handle the “how” and managers handle the “doing”. Performance management combines aspects of strategy, planning, management, legal, and human resources. Incorporating best practices into a performance management system is critical. A strong performance management program can help businesses succeed and employees perform and grow. It also helps build a strong employer brand.
